Dependant on LPG / Oil? Looking for an up-to date, efficient heating system? How about a new ASHP and compact radiators?

As part of the Government’s ECO4 Grant Scheme/ Affordable Warmth Scheme, within a few weeks you could have an up-to-date, highly efficient heating system consisting of a new ASHP, compact radiators, and controls.

*FIRST TIME CENTRAL HEATING ELIGIBILITY IS SUBJECT TO MINIMUM INSULATION REQUIREMENTS (CAVITY WALL AND ROOF INSULATION).

WHETHER ASHP OR BOILER INSTALLED AS PART OF FTCH WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE PROPERTY BEING ‘ON-GAS’ OF ‘OFF-GAS’ (LIVE GAS CONNECTION ON 31ST MARCH 2022).

  • Off-gas homes are considered to be those where:
  • The primary heating system is a fixed coal, oil or LPG heating system
  • Where the home has a fixed electric heating system such as ESH or a wet electric heating system with no evidence of a gas cooker
  • Where there is no fixed gas heating system in place and no connection to mains gas is present including a gas cooker

ECO4 – Makes this possible

Set up by the Government in 2013 with the aim to make UK homes more energy efficient by installing dual energy saving measures, The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) directive means that the main energy suppliers; British Gas, SSE, EDF, E-on Next and alike, are obligated to invest in these measures for householders who qualify under the ‘affordable warmth’ bracket and are in receipt of certain benefits.

ECO4 is the latest round of this Government Grant aided scheme.

Qualifying Criteria for First Time Central Heating Grants

Please note – all FTCH measures regardless of tenure require a PRE EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)

  1. FTCH – for homes that have never had central heating before

Homeowner – D, E, F & G

PRS (Private Rented Sector) – E, F and G

Social Housing– EPC ratings E,F,G with extension to Band D for innovation measures – applicant needs to be on the social company checker and the property rented at a price in the lower quartile for the area.

  1. Your home must have either no heating at all or one of the following heating systems:

For the PMHS (Pre Main Heating Source) – the official definition from Ofgem is ‘any property without a wet heating system’ – a general rule of thumb is anything without radiators but in all instances a survey will be carried out.

Examples of pre-main heating sources that are eligible include:

  • Gas room heaters
  • Electric room heaters
  • Inefficient electric storage heaters (SAP rating of 0.2 or less)
  • Gas fire with back boiler with one or no heat emitters
  • Agas with one or no heat emitter
  • Warm air system
  • Solid fossil fuel fire with back boiler
  • Direct electric underfloor or ceiling heating (not connected to an electric boiler)
  • Bottled LPG room heating
  • Solid fossil fuel room heaters
  • Wood / biomass room heating
  • Oil room heaters

The relevant heating system used to assess your eligibility for First Time Central Heating Grants is that which appears as the ‘Main Heating’ system on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your home. Checks and a survey are carried for confirmation purposes.

To qualify for First Time Central Heating Grants your home must have adequate loft insulation installed and if it has cavity walls, it must have cavity wall insulation installed.

If it does not have either of these installed at the time of your application, the installer of your new central heating system may arrange it for you.
